Japan court rules government liable for Fukushima disaster

Tokyo (AFP) March 17, 2017
A Japanese court on Friday ruled for the first time that the government bears responsibility for the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster and ordered it and the plant operator to pay damages, officials and news reports said. A massive tsunami triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake smashed into the Fukushima Daiichi power plant on Japan's northeastern coast on March 11, 2011. The water overwhelmed reactor cooling systems and sent three into meltdown, spewing radiation over a wide area in Japan's wors ... read more

TU Graz researchers show that enzyme function inhibits battery ageing
Graz, Austria (SPX) Mar 21, 2017
It has been known in biology for a long time that the excited oxygen molecule singlet oxygen is the main cause of ageing in cells. To counter this, nature uses an enzyme called superoxide dismutase to eliminate superoxide as a free radical. Superoxide also occurs in cell respiration for energy production and is the preliminary stage and thus source of singlet oxygen. TU Graz's Stefan Freun ... more

The carbon dioxide loop
Santa Barbara CA (SPX) Mar 17, 2017
The oceans are great at absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air, but when their deep waters are brought to the surface, the oceans themselves can be a source of this prevalent greenhouse gas. Wind patterns together with the Earth's rotation drive deep ocean water - and the CO2 it sequesters - upward, replacing surface water moving offshore. A process known as upwelling, it occurs on th ... more
