Mexico's only nuclear generator was deactivated as Hurricane Karl roared towards Mexico's Gulf coast, Veracruz state governor Fidel Herrera said Friday.
"We decided, at an appropriate time yesterday (Thursday) to close activities at the nuclear plant to avoid risks," Herrera said.
The Laguna Verde electrical plant, north of the port of Veracruz, produces some three percent of national energy consumption.
Hurricane Karl, packing winds of up to 120 miles (195 kilometers) an hour, was forecast to make landfall on the already rain-soaked eastern coast Friday as Mexico reels under one of its wettest seasons on record.
The storm would dump huge amounts of rain and had potential to trigger dangerous flash-flooding as it headed toward a large swathe of central Mexico, including Mexico City, forecasters said,
Mexican state oil giant Pemex on Thursday evacuated Gulf oil platforms and stopped production in 14 wells, as evacuations increased along the east coast, where two of Mexico's main ports lie.
