Westinghouse, FirstEnergy Sign 10-year Nuclear Alliance Agreement

Westinghouse Electric has announced the signing of a comprehensive, 10-year agreement with FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) through which Westinghouse will provide services and support to FENOC's nuclear fleet, which includes the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Shippingport, Pa.; the Davis-Besse Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio; and the Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Perry, Ohio.

Under terms of the agreement, Westinghouse's services will range from large component replacement and engineering services to outage support and spare parts supply. The agreement, tailored specifically to meet FENOC needs, will enable FENOC and Westinghouse to work together to improve in key focus areas associated with safety, plant reliability and efficiency.

"Westinghouse and FirstEnergy have a long history of teaming to ensure success," said Nick Liparulo, senior vice president, Westinghouse Nuclear Services.

"This agreement formalizes our teaming relationship and provides a mechanism for us to help FENOC meet their performance goals through early collaboration and joint determination of plant needs. Additionally, we will work with FENOC to develop project-specific metrics that are tailored to meet the needs of each of their plant sites."

"This alliance agreement ensures that FENOC will have access to quality resources well into the future," said Jim Lash, senior vice president, FENOC Operations.

"This is especially important as the nuclear industry prepares for a renaissance with an increase in demand anticipated for the kind of services and expertise Westinghouse provides."

Speaking in Washington, Ambassador John Bruton, Head of the European Commission's Delegation to the USA, welcomed the statement by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) co-chairman, former Senator Sam Nunn on the importance of the EU's decision to join the USA, the UAE and Norway in funding an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear fuel bank to ensure that member states in compliance with their non-proliferation obligations have reliable access to nuclear fuel reserves.
