GE Hitachi selects BWXT to manufacture reactor pressure vessel for BWRX-300

GE Vernova's nuclear division, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has awarded a contract to BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) for the manufacturing of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for the first BWRX-300 small modular reactor. This unit will be constructed at Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Darlington New Nuclear Project site.

As the largest component of the BWRX-300, the RPV plays a central role in reactor operations. Previously, GEH contracted BWXT for engineering analysis, design assistance, and preparatory procurement and manufacturing work related to the RPV. BWXT was the initial company to be designated as part of GEH's BWRX-300 qualified supplier group.

"The contract to fabricate the reactor pressure vessel for the first BWRX-300 is another key milestone in the deployment of this technology," said Lisa McBride, Canada Country Leader, GEH. "We are excited to be working with BWXT to move this project forward, while bringing benefits to manufacturing workers in Ontario."

Early site preparation at the Darlington location has been completed, with construction of the first unit expected to commence later this year, subject to regulatory approval. Commercial operations are projected to begin by the end of 2029. The site is planned to host four units in total. OPG's collaboration with GEH integrates OPG's extensive nuclear expertise with GEH's experience in boiling water reactor technology to advance a significant energy initiative for Ontario.

The BWRX-300 is a 10th-generation boiling water reactor and a key element of GE Vernova's commitment to energy innovation. Designed to provide reliable electricity, it aims to reduce construction and operational costs through a combination of established, certified nuclear fuel, plant simplifications, proven components, and an NRC-certified design.

The reactor builds on decades of operational experience and innovation in boiling water reactors, featuring a standardized design, an established delivery model, and a track record of successful regulatory collaboration across borders.
