Iran shuns US isotopes offer as sanctions clock ticks
Tehran (AFP) Feb 10, 2010
Iran on Wednesday spurned a US offer to supply it with medical isotopes if it stops further enriching uranium as world powers warned the time for diplomacy was limited and the sanctions clock was ticking. The foreign ministry shunned the US offer as "not logical," after State Department spokesman Philip Crowley floated the idea on Tuesday when Iran said it had begun enriching uranium to 20 percent for a Tehran research reactor. "Shutting down the reactor or stopping the production of medicine is ... read more

Iran was expected Monday to officially inform the UN nuclear watchdog of its plans to enrich uranium to a higher level, but insisted it will stop the process if a UN-backed nuclear deal is clinched. Enrichment at heart of Iran nuclear programme
Paris (AFP) Feb 9, 2010
Enriching uranium for nuclear power - or building a weapon of mass destruction - lies at the heart of the controversy surrounding Iran's nuclear programme. The point of enrichment, the focus of the latest tensions between Iran and western nations, is to boost the ratio in uranium of the uranium-235 isotope, which splits in a chain reaction and releases energy. Enriching uranium to the ... more

13 Spanish towns bid for nuclear waste site
Madrid (AFP) Feb 3, 2010
Thirteen Spanish towns have bid to host a major new nuclear waste storage site, a long-delayed project that is fiercely opposed by environmentalists, the government announced Wednesday. Spain's six nuclear plants, which produce about 20 percent of its electricity, currently store their own spent fuel. But the government last month called for bids from towns interested in building a central storage site. The industry ministry said in a statement that 13 small towns, spread through five region ... read more
