Japan moves ahead with pluthermal reactors

Bolstered by a plan for low-interest loans for new nuclear reactors announced last month, Japan is forging ahead with nuclear power expansion as part of its objective to reduce emissions. According to the World Nuclear Association, nuclear energy accounts for nearly 30 percent of Japan's total electricity production, with a planned increase to 41 percent by 2017. French nuclear giant Areva is urging staff in Niger to stay at home following reports of a coup attempt in the capital Niamey, a spokesman said Thursday. Taiwan plans to keep its three existing nuclear power plants operating for 20 more years after their current licences expire in a bid to help control global warming, an official said Thursday. Iran will not suspend its sensitive high level enrichment in return for radioisotopes as offered in a letter by three world powers to the UN atomic watchdog, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
