Work starts on Brazil's third nuclear reactor
Rio De Janeiro (AFP) June 1, 2010
Work started Tuesday on a third nuclear reactor in Brazil after being stalled for 24 years, the state company Electronuclear said. The reactor, in the Angra dos Reis nuclear power plant 150 kilometers (90 miles) on the coast south of Rio de Janeiro, received final authorization from the National Nuclear Energy Commission. The Belgian government on Friday denied press reports it wanted to slap an additional charge on French group GDF Suez for extending the life of GDF's nuclear plants in Belgium. The death from radiation poisoning of a scrapyard worker in New Delhi has highlighted the lax enforcement of waste disposal laws in India, leading to calls for urgent action.
