Paris wants EDF and Areva to join forces

The French government has called for closer cooperation between utility EDF and reactor maker Areva to help the country regain its leadership in the nuclear power sector. Such closer cooperation would increase France's chances to win reactor contracts abroad, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said Wednesday. The German government is considering auctioning off allowances to extend the lifespan of the country's nuclear reactors. Canadian medical reactor gets nod to restart

Canada's nuclear safety commission authorized Wednesday the restarting of a reactor that produced one-third of the world's supply of medical isotopes before it closed for repairs last year. The half-century old National Research Universal reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, 185 kilometers (115 miles) northwest of Ottawa, could be restarted at the end of the month.
