AREVA NP awarded contract for safety upgrades in seven reactors

AREVA NP will deliver its Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) to seven nuclear reactors operated by Korean Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP). The project execution has already started, completion is scheduled in 2020.

FCVS is a safety related system for the mitigation of severe accidents. It allows the operator to depressurize the containment if needed by filtering the gaseous releases which significantly reduces environmental risks.

Major components will be installed in a separate building at the sites, while the plant is in operation. The FCVS system will be connected to the containment building during a regular outage operation.

"The contract illustrates the economic and technological strength of our technologies and services. It is also a demonstration of our absolute commitment to participating in our customer's performance. AREVA NP is honoured to have been chosen by KHNP to work on these plants of various designs", said Thomas Epron, Senior Vice President Global Sales, Installed Base Business Unit within AREVA NP.

Installed in more than 50 nuclear power plants worldwide, AREVA NP's Filtered Containment Venting System can be used in all reactor designs: pressurized water reactors including Russian VVER, boiling water reactors, and CANDU plants. The design of the system enables a convenient retrofitting into existing plants.
