The placement of the basemat concrete was completed in a record time of 40 hours and 39 minutes for an AP1000 nuclear plant in China, versus an originally estimated time of 45 hours. The resulting structure will serve as the foundation for all of the nuclear island buildings, including the containment vessel and the shield building.

"Completing this important milestone is significant; it means that there are now four AP1000 units simultaneously under construction in China, and all four units being constructed are on schedule," said incoming Senior Vice President of Westinghouse Nuclear Power Plants Deva Chari.

"The Westinghouse/Shaw Consortium, SNPTC, and the owners of the four AP1000 units are confident in our collective ability to provide the people of China with additional clean, safe and reliable electricity by 2013 to further build the local economies of China."

Haiyang is the site of two Westinghouse AP1000 units that are being built under a contract signed in 2007 for four AP1000 units. Two other AP1000 units are currently under construction at Sanmen, China.

The first of the four units, Sanmen Unit 1, is scheduled to come online in 2013, with each unit thereafter subsequently coming online approximately six months later. Additionally, Westinghouse, Shaw and China are currently in discussion on plans for more AP1000 plants to be sited inland of China's coastal areas.

Westinghouse believes the AP1000 is ideally suited for the worldwide nuclear power marketplace. The AP1000 is:

+ Based on standard Westinghouse pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology that has achieved more than 2,500 reactor years of highly successful operation

+ An 1100MWe design that is ideal for providing baseload generating capacity

+ Modular in design, promoting ready standardization and high construction quality

+ Economical to construct and maintain (less concrete and steel and fewer components and systems mean there is less to install, inspect and maintain)

+ Designed to promote ease of operation (features most advanced instrumentation and control (I and C) in the industry)
