Framatome, a leader in nuclear technology, has recently concluded several high-value contracts with Sizewell C Ltd., marking a critical phase in the Sizewell C nuclear development project in the UK.

This significant financial commitment is pivotal for the upcoming construction of two European Pressurized Reactors (EPRs) located on the scenic Suffolk coast, an initiative backed by the British government's strategic investment decision in November 2022.

"Framatome is proud to continue supporting the UK's Net Zero target by 2050 by delivering a replica of the Hinkley Point C project at Sizewell C. The project will benefit from the valuable experience garnered from Hinkley Point C and our teams are determined to make it a success," remarked Bernard Fontana, CEO of Framatome.

This partnership underscores Framatome's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in the UK, aligning with national energy goals and reducing carbon emissions.

The contracts awarded to Framatome encompass a wide range of responsibilities, crucial for the successful deployment and long-term operation of the reactors. The company is set to oversee the design, supply, and commissioning of two nuclear heat production systems, closely modeled after the systems used in the Hinkley Point C project.

Additionally, Framatome is tasked with managing the plant's critical safety instrumentation and control systems, ensuring the highest standards of nuclear safety and operational efficiency.

Moreover, the agreement includes a comprehensive long-term fuel supply deal, wherein Framatome will produce and supply the nuclear fuel essential for powering the reactors. A separate contract also establishes Framatome's role in providing ongoing services and maintenance for the nuclear facility, underlining its integral role in the project's lifecycle from construction through to operation.

The projected output from the two EPRs at Sizewell is set to dramatically boost the UK's capacity for low-carbon electricity production. Once operational, the reactors will collectively generate 3.2 GW of electricity, enough to power approximately six million homes and significantly contribute to the UK's energy independence and sustainability targets for the next sixty years.

Ukraine starts building first US-design nuclear reactors
Netishyn, Ukraine (AFP) April 13, 2024
Ukraine has started constructing two US-designed reactors at a nuclear power plant in the west of the country following devastating Russian attacks on its energy network. Workers at Khmelnytskyi nuclear power station on Thursday poured a symbolic cubic metre of concrete for the reactors, which will use US technology and fuel, as Ukrainian and US flags fluttered. The project is aimed at increasing Ukraine's energy security and reducing its dependence on Russian nuclear technology. Guests at t ... read more
