GENUSA to supply GNF2 reload fuel for Vattenfall Forsmark plant

Global Nuclear Fuel and ENUSA have secured a new contract to supply reload fuel for Vattenfall's Forsmark nuclear power plant in Sweden through their joint venture GENUSA. The agreement, which begins in 2028, covers several reloads of GNF2 fuel assemblies designed to deliver higher power output and lower operating costs for boiling water reactors at the site.

GENUSA is jointly owned by Global Nuclear Fuel, a GE Vernova-led alliance with Hitachi, and the Spanish nuclear fuel company ENUSA. The new Forsmark contract builds on more than three decades of collaboration between the partners in the Nordic nuclear market.

ENUSA has a long track record supplying Forsmark with GNF-designed fuel, having manufactured more than 3,500 fuel assemblies for the plant since 1993. Company executives said the latest award reflects Vattenfall's continued confidence in the joint venture's products and engineering support for boiling water reactor operations in Europe.

Under the new contract, GNF2 fuel assemblies for Forsmark will be fabricated at ENUSA's Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing Plant in Juzbado, Spain. The plant will use components supplied by Global Nuclear Fuel as part of the established supply chain between the two companies.

GNF2 is a high performance boiling water reactor fuel design developed to improve reactor economics by combining increased power capability with reduced operating costs. The assemblies destined for Forsmark will incorporate Defender PLUS debris filter technology to help prevent feedwater-borne particles from entering and damaging the fuel.

The Defender PLUS debris filters used in the GNF2 design are engineered to significantly increase the likelihood of capturing debris in the feedwater before it can reach sensitive fuel components. This feature supports fuel reliability and helps operators manage the risk of debris-related issues during plant operation.

Executives from both Global Nuclear Fuel and ENUSA highlighted the strategic importance of the Forsmark award for their European nuclear fuel business. They noted that the Juzbado facility has already delivered more than 12,600 boiling water reactor fuel assemblies to utilities across Europe, underscoring the scale and experience behind the GENUSA offering.

The new contract further strengthens the long standing relationship between GENUSA and Vattenfall as Sweden continues to rely on nuclear power as a key component of its electricity supply. The partners expect the combination of proven GNF2 technology and established European manufacturing capacity to support stable, efficient fuel deliveries to Forsmark over the life of the agreement.
