Power company offers nuke-heavy power plan

German power company RWE is offering consumers a zero-carbon energy plan fueled mostly by nuclear power plants.

Der Spiegel said the "Pro-Climate Power" derives 68 percent of its power from nuclear sources and 32 percent from hydroelectric energy.

The plan, which costs slightly more than other packages, is being marketed to consumers concerned about global warming. Power industry lobbyists see huge economic benefits in the use of nuclear power plants, the newspaper said.

Greenpeace Germany is critical of the new plan. "'Pro-Climate' is just a label. The product is in no way ecological. It does nothing to help the environment," Andree Bohling, an energy expert with Greenpeace Germany, told Spiegel Online.

Fire at Japan nuke power plant injures worker: operator

 A fire broke out at a nuclear power plant in northern Japan on Thursday, injuring one worker but causing no radiation leak, the operator said.
