Some of Chevron's highest producing assets in the Niger Delta were blown up early Wednesday, the regional militant group Niger Delta Avengers claimed on social media.

The militant group has turned more frequently to social media to make claims of responsibility for attacks on energy infrastructure and to counter narratives offered by the Nigerian military.

The Niger Delta Avengers issued a direct warning to Chevron in mid-May: "We are coming for you." Spokesperson Mudoch Abginibo said in a warning to Chevron that it should be wary of working in the region because, while the government and international oil companies work to exploit the reserves, the people in the region are left "to rot."

Its latest warning of "something big," the group said the militant campaign against oil companies working in the Niger Delta will "be bloody." That warning from earlier this week coincided with a report from Amnesty International that said Royal Dutch Shell, blamed for more than 100 oil spills in the Niger Delta, was destroying the livelihoods of the Nigerians living in the region.

The Niger Delta Avengers said it was frustrated by what it saw as a lack of attention to the region paid by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. The Buhari administration said it would start a campaign to clean up the region later this week.
