China to build bridge to resource-rich island: report

China plans to build a bridge connecting the country's industrial powerhouse with a resource-rich island in the south, state media reported.

Construction on the 30-kilometre (18.6-mile) expressway, which will link the southern province of Guangdong and the tropical island of Hainan, is expected to start in 2012, the China Daily said Wednesday.

Once opened to traffic in 2020, it will cut the travelling time between Hainan and the mainland to 20 minutes, it said.

Currently a 55-minute ferry ride is needed to cross the Qiongzhou Strait separating the island from the mainland.

Total investment in the double-decker bridge will exceed 20 billion yuan (2.9 billion dollars), the report said.
