Clinton, Yang hold talks amid US-China tensions

Hanoi (AFP) Oct 30, 2010
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton began talks in Hanoi Saturday with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi amid tensions between between their two countries.

Clinton and Yang made no remarks as they sat down for talks on the sidelines of the 16-nation East Asia Summit, which the United States is attending for the first time along with Russia.

During a stop in Hawaii on Thursday, Clinton vowed that the United States will get its rocky relations with China "right" despite flaring rows.

She is due to travel later Saturday to China's Hainan island to meet Chinese state councilor Dai Bingguo.

Washington and Beijing have jousted over currency, trade, and human rights in recent months, but both have an interest in cooling their rhetoric ahead of Chinese President Hu Jintao's planned visit to the United States in January.

Clinton is on a tour of Asia that also includes stops in Cambodia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Australia, and American Samoa over the next two weeks.
