Cyclone Bingiza kills five in Madagascar

Antananarivo (AFP) Feb 15, 2011
Tropical Cyclone Bingiza has killed at least five people and affected nearly 3,000 after it pummeled northern Madagascar, authorities said Tuesday.

One person was missing as the cyclone weakened in strength, the disaster management authority said.

While the cyclone moved off the island earlier in the day weather agencies have warned it may return to the island's southwest. And authorities have maintained a high alert over the affected regions due to heavy rain.

The Red Cross was informing local residents in particular in slums who are most exposed to floods, said the body's disaster management chief Jocelyn Razafindrakoto.

Tropical storm Hubert had killed at least 83 people and affected a total of 187,000 in March 2010.
