Electrabel has selected Framatome to modernize the rod control system at the Tihange 3 nuclear reactor in Belgium. The project supports the facility's life extension program under the 2023 agreement between Engie and the Belgian government.

The Tihange 3 pressurized water reactor generates 1,030 megawatts and has operated since 1985. Framatome will replace control cabinets with Rodline technology and perform engineering, installation and maintenance work over several years.

The rod control system manages reactor power levels and provides automatic shutdown capability during operational events. Framatome's Rodline solution operates in nuclear facilities worldwide as the most widely deployed digital rod control technology.

This modernization aligns with Belgium's energy security strategy and Europe's transition to low-carbon energy sources. Extending reactor operating life maintains reliable electricity supply while supporting sustainable energy objectives.

"This new contract reflects Electrabel's renewed trust in Framatome and our expertise in modernizing nuclear facilities. We are proud to contribute to the safety and longevity of the Belgian nuclear fleet," stated Laurent Thieffry, Senior Executive Vice-President I&C Business Unit at Framatome. "This partnership is part of a long-term vision, driven by the commitment and performance of the teams at Electrabel and Framatome."

The project builds on Framatome's existing work in Belgium, where the company provides reactor modernization and lifetime extension services for multiple nuclear facilities.
