German energy company RWE said Monday it finished installing foundations off the British coast for what will be one of the largest wind farms in the world.

The company said it finished 160 foundations set for the Gwynt y Môr wind farm, located about eight miles off the coast of North Wales.

"With this achievement behind us we can focus on installing the final 19 turbines, commissioning the entire array and bringing on line a highly capable renewable energy source, powered from the U.K.'s own freely available natural resources and able to support approximately 400,000 homes," project director Toby Edmonds said in a statement.

The wind farm will have a peak operational capacity of 576 megawatts, which RWE says will be enough to meet the energy demands of about 30 percent of the homes in Wales.

The company said the wind farm should go into service at the end of this year.
