Framatome has secured a contract with Bruce Power to upgrade digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for Units 5, 7, and 8 at the Ontario-based nuclear facility. These enhancements build on the success of previous digital upgrades at Units 1, 2, and 6, as well as ongoing projects at Units 3 and 4. The upgrades are part of Bruce Power's Major Component Replacement (MCR) program, designed to extend the operational life of its nuclear fleet and support Ontario's clean energy needs for decades.

"Framatome is excited to continue the successful implementations of digital system upgrades to support Bruce Power's MCR program and their investment in the future of clean energy for Ontario," said Frederic Lelievre, Senior Executive Vice President, Sales, Regional Platforms and Instrumentation and Control Business Unit at Framatome. "Our local experts in Kincardine, Pickering, and Montreal have deep roots in Canada and will continue to provide the best solutions and expertise to support the Bruce fleet now and well into the future."

Under this contract, Framatome will replace the existing analog system with a modern digital platform for the primary heat transport, feed bleed, and relief system. This upgrade will ensure stable reactor pressure control during both normal and transient conditions.

The project includes the implementation of the Tricon programmable logic controller (PLC) technology, a highly reliable system boasting over a billion operational hours without failure on demand. This proven technology enhances safety and ensures high availability for plant operations.

"Bruce Power is pleased to continue its strong partnership with Framatome and the upgrades to our digital systems will allow our units to continue to provide clean and reliable energy to the people of Ontario for decades to come," said David Furr, Bruce Power's Vice-President, Supply Chain.

As nuclear plants pursue license renewals for extended operation, upgrading I&C systems is critical. Often referred to as a plant's "central nervous system," these systems provide essential operational data, enable control over safety systems, and automatically safeguard the reactor when needed.

Bruce Power is Canada's only private-sector nuclear generator, supplying 30 percent of Ontario's electricity annually. The company operates eight CANDU pressurized heavy water reactors at its site near Tiverton, Ontario, on Lake Huron's eastern shore.

Framatome integrates 3D-printed fuel components in Swedish nuclear reactor
Paris, France (SPX) Dec 26, 2024
Framatome has advanced nuclear technology by installing innovative 3D-printed fuel components in the Ringhals 4 reactor operated by Vattenfall in Sweden. Initiated in September 2024, the project tests the durability of 3D-printed anti-debris filters under real reactor conditions. The multi-year irradiation program will include annual inspections during planned outages and refueling operations to evaluate their performance and safety. "This marks a new major step forward in the use of additive manu ... read more
