Framatome has secured two major contracts from Electrabel to support the modernization and extended operation of Belgium's Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear reactors. The agreements follow a 2023 deal between ENGIE and the Belgian government to prolong the lifespan of both units.

At Tihange 3, Framatome will replace the Flux Monitoring System (FMS), a critical component that monitors neutron power distribution to ensure the core operates within design and safety parameters. This multiyear initiative covers engineering design, component supply, on-site installation, and long-term maintenance.

The second contract focuses on the Reactor Coolant Pumps (RCP) at both Tihange 3 and Doel 4. It includes the modernization and support of the three motor stators per site, along with spare part delivery. These primary loop motor pumps are essential for plant safety and performance. Framatome will carry out the work at its specialized facilities in northern France, drawing on decades of experience in pump component manufacture and service.

"These two contracts reflect Electrabel's renewed confidence in Framatome and our ability to support our customers in modernizing their nuclear facilities. We are proud to contribute to the lifetime extension and safety of the Belgian nuclear fleet," said Frederic Lelievre, Senior Executive Vice President, Sales, Regional Platforms, and I&C Business Unit at Framatome. "Today's agreements reaffirm our long-term commitment to supporting safe, cost-effective, reliable, and low-carbon electricity production in Belgium."

This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to ensure energy security and reduce carbon emissions through the continued safe operation of existing nuclear infrastructure.

Berlin, Germany (SPX) Jul 02, 2025
GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH) and Fortum have signed an early works agreement to support potential deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Finland and Sweden. The move follows Fortum's March feasibility study, which identified the BWRX-300 as one of the technologies suitable for new nuclear development in both countries. "After diligently evaluating several aspects of SMR technologies over the past two years Fortum concluded that the BWRX-300 is a technology for p ... read more
