GE Vernova's Nuclear Fuel business, Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF), has delivered high burnup fuel rods to the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for post-commercial operation analysis. The rods have completed three full cycles at a U.S. nuclear facility.

"This shipment of these rods is another milestone in the drive to develop the next generation of even safer and more reliable fuel," said Mike Chilton, Executive Vice President, GNF. "We are proud to be part of this collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy to benefit the entire industry."

"This fuel shipment to Oak Ridge National Laboratory is an important step in GNF's efforts to commercialize their high burnup fuel," said Frank Goldner, a nuclear engineer within DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy. "High burnup fuels are expected to enhance the performance of today's reactors and will help us on our path to reach net-zero emissions by 2050."

Produced at GNF's Wilmington, NC facility, the rods will undergo evaluations to supply GNF and DOE with critical insights on high burnup fuel, a major focus of DOE's Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) program.

The utilization of higher burnup fuel is expected to improve nuclear safety by allowing fuel to remain in reactor cores longer before removal for storage, potentially decreasing the number of bundles used and enhancing fuel cycle economics and power outputs. ORNL's post-irradiation examinations are pivotal in supporting GNF's ongoing development, engineering, and licensing efforts, aiming for safe and reliable fuel performance under extended operational conditions.
