New Egyptian Navy corvette takes to water
Paris (UPI) Sep 19, 2016 - The first of four Gowind 2500 corvettes for the Egyptian Navy has been floated by French naval shipbuilder DCNS at its shipyard in Lorient.

The Elfateh -- 335 feet long and with a speed of 25 knots -- is scheduled for delivery to Egypt next year. Three sister ships will be built at Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt under a technology transfer agreement.

"DCNS developed the Gowind family for navies seeking to acquire compact new-generation warships that are rugged, reliable and well-armed," DCNS said in a statement. "Gowind corvettes and OPVs [offshore patrol vessels] combine force projection capabilities with powerful sensor and combat systems controlled by a Setis combat management system originally developed for the FREMM frigate program."

In addition to its general naval capabilities, the Gowind 2500 can be outfitted to the client navy's requirements regarding both the propulsion configuration and the combat system, including mission-specific suites for anti-submarine warfare.

The vessels are typically armed with MBDA's Exocet MM40 anti-ship missiles and VL Mica anti-air missiles.

A Lockheed Martin-led team launched the 13th U.S. Navy littoral combat ship, the Wichita, during a ceremony Saturday in Marinette, Wis., the company said.

The ceremony sent the Wichita into the Menominee river at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipyard, Lockheed said in a statement.

LCS 13 will undergo additional outfitting and testing at Fincantieri Marinette before the ship's anticipated delivery next year.

The Freedom-variant LCS is currently in full-rate production, with six ships under construction at the Marinette shipyard and three more in long-lead material procurement.

The industry team is comprised of Lockheed Martin, Fincantieri Marinette Marine, naval architect Gibbs & Cox and more than 500 suppliers in 37 states.

LCS 13 will be the third Navy ship named USS Wichita, joining the CA-45 World War II-era heavy crusier and a Wichita-class replenishment oiler.

Earlier this month the Navy announced an overhaul of the oft-troubled and costly LCS program.
