GE Vernova's Nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) (NYSE: GEV), has chosen Montreal-based Velan Inc. to provide engineering support and manufacture valves for the first BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR).

"Our collaboration with Velan will further strengthen the robust and experienced Canadian nuclear supply chain and bring economic benefits to the country," explained Sean Sexstone, Executive Vice President, Advanced Nuclear at GEH. "It also positions Velan to be a strategic supplier as our technology is deployed globally. We will continue to look for opportunities to work with Canadian suppliers to support the deployment of the BWRX-300."

James A. Mannebach, Chairman and CEO of Velan Inc., added, "Velan's involvement in this project highlights our decades-long leadership in the nuclear power sector. As we approach our 75th anniversary in 2025, we are remarkably well-positioned to support this landmark project and help shape the future of Canada's nuclear energy landscape through Small Modular Reactor technology."

GEH and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) are currently developing the first BWRX-300 at OPG's Darlington site. Early site preparations have been completed, with construction scheduled to begin in 2025. Commercial operation is projected to start by the end of 2029. The Darlington site is set to house four 300 MW units in total. OPG's extensive operating experience, combined with GEH's nuclear expertise, will play a critical role in ensuring the project's success and helping to transform energy landscapes in other regions.

The BWRX-300 is a significant component of GE Vernova's commitment to energy transition. In addition to supporting customer decarbonization goals, the reactor is designed to lower both construction and operational costs by utilizing a unique combination of existing fuel, simplified plant design, proven components, and an NRC-certified reactor design.
