Ikea pledges $62mn for world's largest refugee camp

Geneva (AFP) Aug 30, 2011

The charitable arm of furniture giant Ikea has made a record $62 million pledge to help thousands of people at Dadaab, the world's biggest refugee camp in Kenya, the UNHCR said Tuesday.

The donation from the Ikea Foundation "is the largest private donation that the UN refugee agency has received in its 60-year history, and the first time that a private body has chosen to directly support a major refugee complex," said Adrian Edwards, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The funds would be staggered over three years for Dadaab, which is home to 440,000 Somali refugees including 152,000 who had arrived in 2011 after fleeing serious drought and conflict in their homeland.
