Indian army receives three Dhanush howitzers

GenDyn to refurbish 107 U.S. Army Stryker vehicles
Washington (UPI) Jul 18, 2016 - General Dynamics Land Systems has been awarded a $15 million U.S. Army order for refurbishment work on 107 Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicles.

The order comes under a $47 million cost-plus-fixed-fee contract awarded to the company in April and expected to be completed in 2019.

The Army announced another contract modification for the company in May that will see General Dynamics Land Systems receive about $329 million for a 30mm cannon upgrade on the Strykers.

That contract includes production, logistics, product development and test support for the upgrade.

Introduced in 2000, the medium-weight, eight-wheeled Stryker now features a Double-V hull. It can reach speeds of more than 60 mph.

It also features 10 different configurations and 85 percent commonality across the fleet.

The estimated completion date for the refurbishment work is July 2017.

The Indian army has taken possession of three new, indigenously developed 155 mm Dhanush howitzers, the Press Trust of India reported Monday.

The guns were handed over by the Gun Carriage Factory defense company, PTI reports.

India will now begin user trials of the weapons, the factory's general manager, Sanjay Shrivastava, was quoted as saying in the PTI report.

"Another consignment of three guns is being readied and these howitzers too will be delivered to the army shortly," he said.

The towed howitzer features a strike range of about 22 miles and was developed by the Ordnance Factory Board.

The army called for the six howitzers following successful summer and winter trials, PTI reports.

Those trials involved about 2,000 rounds being fired successfully in different climatic conditions.

India's army has been seeking a total of 114 Dhanush guns to augment its firepower, Shrivastava said.

Last week, India's Defense Research and Development Organization announced a successful proof firing of a 155mm, .52 caliber Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System.
