Ingalls Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Huntington Ingalls Industries, has been awarded a $120 million U.S. Navy contract modification for the service's LHA 8 amphibious assault ship program.

The fixed-price-incentive modification covers additional long lead time in support of the amphibious assault ship program, known as the Landing Helicopter Assault Replacement, or LHA(R), an America-class ship initiative that will eventually replace Tarawa-class ships.

Work procurement includes machinery control system components and software, cargo and aircraft elevators, gas turbines and refrigeration units.

Work will be performed in Ohio and elsewhere in the United States and is expected to be completed by June 2020.

Naval Sea Systems Command is the contracting entity.

LHA 8 will be the first Flight I America-class ship, reintroducing a well deck without sacrificing aviation capability.

Ingalls received the contract for LHA 8 in June, a contract that could be worth up to $3.1 billion if all options are exercised.
