International Collaboration Boosts Planetary Defense Efforts with Hera Mission

Paris, France (SPX) Apr 17, 2024
The team managing the European Space Agency's Hera mission, designed for asteroid deflection, recently gathered in the ESTEC Test Centre cleanroom in the Netherlands, showcasing the mission's spacecraft.

Present in the photograph are members from Tyvak International in Italy and GomSpace in Luxembourg, producers of the Milani and Juventas CubeSats, set to accompany Hera into the cosmos. Cheryl Reed from the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, who previously managed NASA's DART mission, is notably featured at the center of the group.

Additionally, ISISpace, a firm based in the Netherlands and responsible for creating the Deep Space Deployers for the mission, was represented. These deployers will secure the CubeSats during transit to the Didymos asteroid and release them upon arrival.

The Hera and DART missions, part of the larger Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) collaboration, demonstrate an international effort in planetary defense. The initiative began with DART's successful impact on the Dimorphos asteroid in September 2022, which effectively altered its orbit around Didymos.

In October, Hera will embark on a critical two-year journey to the Didymos binary asteroid system. This mission aims to further analyze the asteroid up close, building on DART's initial findings to enhance our understanding and capability of asteroid deflection strategies.

Asteroid 2024 BX1 spotted three hours before impact
Paris (ESA) Jan 26, 2024
It was at 22:48 CET on Saturday 20 January when veteran asteroid hunter Sarneczky discovered a new asteroid using the 60 cm Schmidt Telescope at Piszkesteto Mountain Station, part of Konkoly Observatory in Hungary. He immediately sent his data on the asteroid's trajectory to the Minor Planet Center, but with just three initial observations, it was impossible to know for sure whether it was on a collision course with Earth. However, Sarneczky continued tracking the asteroid, and just a few mi ... read more
