Iran nabs assassination team trained 'abroad'

Tehran (AFP) Dec 7, 2010
Iran has arrested members of an assassination team that were trained in a neighbouring country and who recently attacked two nuclear scientists in Tehran, Tehran's prosecutor was quoted by news agencies as saying on Tuesday.

"Members of a team trained for assassination were identified and arrested by the intelligence ministry" after receiving training in a "neighbouring country," Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi was quoted by Fars news agency as saying.

Mehr news agency added him saying the team had undergone "military training outside the country to assassinate two university professors."

That was a reference to the murder of a university professor, Majid Shahriari, and the wounding of another, Fereydoon Abbasi Davani, on November 29 in separate bomb attacks.

The two were prominent members of Iran's nuclear programme.

"Based on their confessions, (the members of the team) were supposed to plan further assassinations," Dolatabadi said.

He did not clarify whether these people were the same ones who were arrested last week in connection with this case.

On December 2, Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi said "some elements" behind the attacks had been arrested.

Iran blamed the attacks on the intelligence services of the United States and Israel, which suspect Tehran's nuclear ambitions harbour a military dimension. The Islamic republic denies the charge.

In January, another Iranian nuclear scientist, Masoud Ali Mohammadi, was killed in a bomb attack Tehran blamed on "mercenaries" hired by Tel Aviv and Washington.

Dolatabadi said none of the main elements behind the three attacks have been arrested.

"Although elements behind the assassination of martyr Ali Mohammadi and the two recent ones have been arrested, the team has provided judiciary officials with good clues about the elements of the assassinations," he added.
