Kabul (AFP) Nov 3, 2010 The toll of foreign troops killed in the Afghan war this year rose to 615 on Wednesday with the death of a soldier in the once peaceful north of the country, NATO said. NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the soldier "died following an insurgent attack in northern Afghanistan". It gave no further details. AFP's toll of foreign soldiers killed fighting the Taliban-led insurgency this year is 615, based on a tally kept by the independent icasualties.org website. It is the deadliest year on record. In 2009, the toll was 521. NATO and the United States have more than 150,000 soldiers deployed to Afghanistan fighting the insurgency, now in its 10th year. The insurgency is concentrated in the southern Taliban hotspots of Kandahar and Helmand provinces -- also major opium-producing regions. But as security has deteriorated, the Taliban have spread their influence across most of the country and the north has seen an increase in violence.
