A sixth diesel-electric submarine for Russia's Black Sea fleet was launched Tuesday at a shipyard in St. Petersburg. The Varshavyanka-class sub, named Kolpino, is an advanced version of what NATO designates as a Kilo-class submarine. Built under the Russian Navy's Project 636.3, the submarine is between 229 and 242 feet long and has a submerged speed of as much as 25 knots. Weaponry includes torpedoes, mines and missiles. "It's a big day for the Navy, for St. Petersburg, for the country," Deputy Commander of the Russian Navy Vice Adm. Alexander Fedotenkov was quoted by state-owned Tass as saying. "The submarine launch is a national event. Admiralty Shipyard is indeed the flagship of the national shipbuilding industry. Your ships are delivered on time and with proper quality."
Companies team for anti-torpedo torpedo development Collaboration on the SeaSpider will combine the expertise of Atlas Elektronik in naval systems like the SeaHake mod4 heavyweight torpedo and the rocket technology of Magellan Aerospace to leverage Canadian and German technology to develop the hard-kill weapon. Under a memorandum of understanding, Atlas Elektronik Canada will build up capability in project management, research and development and work with Magellan Aerospace. Atlas Elektronik Naval Weapons Division in Wedel, Germany, will provide ongoing support. SeaSpider, which will be integrated with sonar and acoustic sensors, is designed to provide hard-kill defense capability against all torpedo threats for surface vessels and submarines. "Magellan welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with Atlas Elektronik, a recognized world-leader in naval systems," said Phil Underwood, president and chief executive officer of Magellan Aerospace. "Magellan has a proven record of launching globally successful propulsion products, and looks forward to participating in this new endeavour with Atlas." Atlas Elektronik Canada is a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Elektronik GmbH of Germany. It serves the Canadian market with a specific focus on command and control, sonar, and unmanned vehicles. Magellan Aerospace provides complex assemblies and systems solutions to aircraft and engine manufacturers, and defense and space agencies worldwide.
