New frigate for French Navy takes to water

A fifth FREMM multimission frigate for the French Navy has taken to water at a DCNS shipyard in France.

The Bretagne, which will be armed with Aster and Exocet missiles, displaces about 6,600 tons and is nearly 466 feet long. Its maximum speed is about 26 knots.

The ship's range is 6,000 nautical miles at a speed of 16 knots.

DCNS is scheduled to deliver the vessel to the French Navy in 2018.

A total of five FREMM frigates have been delivered by DCNS to date. Three were delivered to the French Navy and two for international customers Morocco and Egypt.

France has ordered a total of eight frigates from DCNS. Six of those ships are to be delivered by 2019.
