Nuclear Power Plant Near New York City Shut Down After Fire

One of the units of the Indian Point nuclear power plant was safely shut down after transformer's fire, according to the Entergy Corporation operating the facility.

It stressed that there is no danger to public health and safety since all the Indian Point's emergency systems worked as designed.

The facility produces 25 percent of the New York City and Westchester's electricity, generating about 2,000 megawatts of electricity.

French nuclear group Areva, which incurred massive losses last year, announced Thursday it would cut up to 6,000 jobs worldwide as it seeks to slash its costs by a billion euros by 2017. The number of job cuts will be between 5,000 and 6,000 worldwide, said the group's human resources director Francois Nogue. Between 3,000 and 4,000 of the job losses will be in France.
