Porsche mulls factories in Asia, US: chief

Berlin (AFP) Jan 16, 2011
Iconic Porsche 911 sportscars could in the future be produced in factories in Asia or the United States, the German firm's chief executive said on Sunday.

"This year, we are going to discuss whether to start assembly in Asia or North America," Matthias Mueller told Focus magazine.

"The main thing is that the car has 'Engineered by Porsche' on it. Where it is produced is no longer so important," he added.

Currently, the company manufactures its cars in factories in Leipzig, in eastern Germany and Stuttgart, in the west.

Porsche saw a strong gain in sales in 2010. Some 95,000 cars were delivered to customers last year, an increase of 25 percent.

Brother of China 'toll dodger' confesses: state media
Beijing (AFP) Jan 16, 2011 - The brother of a man sentenced to life in prison for evading massive road toll fees in central China's Henan province has confessed to police that he was the real offender, state media said Sunday.

Shi Junfeng turned himself into police late Saturday night claiming that he -- and not his older brother, Shi Jianfeng -- had evaded the toll fees, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing local police.

Shi Jianfeng, a self-employed driver, was sentenced last week for using fake military licence plates on his trucks to dodge toll fees to the tune of more than 3.7 million yuan ($558,000) over an eight-year period.

The harsh sentence sparked a firestorm of criticism on Chinese blogs and online forums, with many netizens hitting out at exorbitant road fees and noting that Shi Jianfeng's income was far smaller than the road costs he would typically have incurred.

The intermediate court of the city of Pingdingshan, which had sentenced Shi Jianfeng, on Friday granted him a retrial after authorities subsequently interrogated him and found "new evidence", according to a statement on the court's website.

Three court officials, including the chief judge who jailed Shi, have been suspended over the "dubious sentence" pending the results of an investigation, Xinhua quoted Tian Liwen, vice president of the Henan Provincial Higher Court as saying Sunday.

Tian told a news conference that court president Guo Baozhen was also under investigation after he was given a warning.

The court had failed to properly investigate the case against Shi and "apparently lacked evidence" when they sentenced him to life in jail, Tian said.

Shi Junfeng told police that his brother had taken the rap for him. After his brother was detained, Shi Junfeng said he offered bribes to officials who promised that his brother would be released, the report said.

Shi Junfeng was being questioned before being transferred to the Pingdingshan Public Security Bureau, the report said.
