Researchers at Shanghai University, in collaboration with global experts, have introduced a transformative model for optimizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspections in engineering projects. The study, featured in the journal Engineering, showcases an advanced mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model and variable neighborhood search (VNS) algorithm, pioneering a novel method in engineering management. The research team, led by Lu Zhen, Zhiyuan Yang, Gilbert Laporte, Wen Yi, and Tianyi Fan, has crafted an optimization framework that significantly enhances the efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness of UAV-based engineering inspections.

UAV technology's rapid evolution has markedly benefited industries, especially engineering, by offering safer and more efficient inspection alternatives to traditional manual methods. The newly developed MILP model and VNS algorithm address UAV operational constraints, including limited battery life and no-fly zones, ensuring thorough and adaptable inspection route planning. This breakthrough promises substantial improvements in managing large-scale engineering projects by minimizing human risk and maximizing operational efficiency.

A pivotal application of this research was demonstrated in the Shiziyang Bridge project case study, where the model significantly optimized UAV inspection planning, quickly identifying structural risks and issues. This practical application highlights the model's potential to redefine engineering management and inspections, pointing to a future where UAV technology plays a central role in project safety and efficiency.

The study, "Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Inspection Routing and Scheduling for Engineering Management," details the methodology, experiments, and implications of this innovation, offering a comprehensive guide for engineers, project managers, and policymakers interested in leveraging UAV technology.
