Russia calms fears over 'asteroid danger'

The Russian emergency agency has announced that none of the known asteroids will pose a threat to the Earth in 2013.

The calming news came after numerous media reports dubbed the 300-meter asteroid Apophis, which is expected to whizz past our planet at a distance of 14.46 million kilometers, "the space threat of the century."

According to NASA scientists, the space wanderer can make a comeback in 16 years, passing within 36,000 kilometers of the Earth, and even hit it in 2036.

Scientists stressed that asteroids of such size drop on the Earth once per millennium, while the odds of Apophis colliding with our planet are just four to a million.

"In 2013, none of the known asteroids will pass by the Earth at a dangerous distance," the Russian Antistikhiya (Anti-Disaster) Center has said in its annual report.
