Russia protests to US over non-proliferation 'violations'

by Staff Writers
Moscow (AFP) Aug 7, 2010
The Russian foreign ministry on Saturday complained that the United States has been violating its obligations over a number of weapons non-proliferation and arms control agreements.

The ministry published a 11 page document outlining what it said were "the facts of violations by the United States of its obligations in the sphere of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and arms control."

It said Washington had infringed past agreements on bilateral arms reduction, an international convention on a ban on chemical weapons, a ban on biological weapons and the Hague code against ballistic missile proliferation.

It was not immediately clear what had prompted the ministry to publish the material.

Russia and the United States signed a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) on April 8 to drastically cut back their nuclear weapons arsenal.

However the agreement has yet to be ratified by the US Senate or the Russian parliament amid a continued squabble between the two sides about US plans to install missile defence facilities in ex-Communist Eastern Europe.
