Components for afterbody/tailcone sections of MK 48 Mod 7 torpedoes are to be manufactured for the U.S. Navy by SAIC.

The work, commissioned by Naval Sea Systems Command, will be conducted in partnership with Lockheed Martin, who will procure various afterbody/tailcone assemblies and provide engineering services.

"As the manufacturer of the MK 48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedo afterbody/tailcone sections, SAIC will ensure that the Navy is ready to meet their missions at sea across the globe."

The contract is for a 27-month base period of performance, with options for the procurement of spares, production support material, engineering services, test equipment design and manufacturing, and hardware repair services.

Its value: more than $383 million if all options are exercised.

Science Applications International Corp. said work on the project is expected to be completed in January of 2020.
