Saab tests BriteCloud active decoy system

An expendable active decoy system by Selex ES has been successfully fired from a Gripen jet fighter during capability tests in Sweden.

Saab, maker of the Gripen, intends to offer the BriteCloud system as an enhancement option to electronic warfare systems aboard the Gripen.

The testing involved three releases from a Gripen using a standard Gripen counter-measures dispenser.

"These trials successfully validated the in-flight mechanical compatibility of the BriteCloud EAD with the Gripen's counter-measures system," said Hans Einerth, Wing Commander Flying at Saab. "The tests showed good clearance margins and allow further system integration work to go forward. The Gripen electronic warfare system is continuously updated to meet emerging threats and BriteCloud integration is an important step in this process."

Selex ES describes BriteCloud as a self-contained, digital radio frequency memory jammer for defense against RF-guided missiles and fire-control radars. It detects RF emissions and cross-references them against its pre-programmed threat library. It then applies advanced algorithms and emits a deception signal to defeat the threat radar and incoming missile.
