A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook southern Mexico early Friday, officials said, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The tremor occurred at 3:29 am local time (0929 GMT), 140 km southwest of the town of Pijijiapan in Chiapas state, near the border with Guatemala, the National Seismological Service said.

Chiapas' civil protection agency said on Twitter there were no immediate reports of damage, injuries or loss of human life.

The tremor was felt in neighboring Oaxaca state, also with no damage.

Mexico registers intense seismic activity because it is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

In September 2017, a 7.1-magnitude quake killed 369 people, the majority in Mexico City. And an 8.1-magnitude quake killed about 10,000 people in 1985.

There were no fatalities, even though the earthquake was felt as far as Rennes in Brittany in the north and two aftershocks were recorded on Saturday morning. ... read more
