Merah Putih 2, which separated from Falcon 9's second stage around 34 minutes after liftoff, is the second commercial satellite SpaceX has launched for the Indonesian satellite company Telkomsat. The satellite's journey to space began in Florida in late January, where it underwent a series of preparations and was integrated into Falcon 9's second stage, readying it for this critical mission.
The launch of Merah Putih 2 follows the successful deployment of its predecessor, the Merah Putih (formerly known as Telkom-4), aboard a Falcon 9 rocket in 2018. This continuity of missions underscores the growing partnership between SpaceX and Telkomsat, aiming to bolster Indonesia's telecommunications infrastructure.
Contracted by Telkomsat, Thales Alenia Space took charge of building the Merah Putih 2 satellite. The aerospace giant announced that the satellite is designed to deliver over 32 Gbps of Internet speed, promising a significant leap in connectivity for the Indonesian population. This enhancement is expected to address the growing demand for reliable and fast Internet services, further enabling Indonesians to participate in the global digital economy.
