Major quake strikes off Alaska; local tsunami warning
Los Angeles (AFP) June 23, 2014 - An 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, generating a local tsunami warning.

But the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that "based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected," adding that Hawaii was also not at risk.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 2053 GMT, was located 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of remote Little Sitkin Island, in the western Aleutians.

The epicenter was located at a depth of about 70 miles.

The National Tsunami Warning Center said the warning was in effect for coastal areas from Nikolski on Umnak Island to Attu Island at the far western end of the Aleutians.

In those areas, "widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents are possible, and may continue for many hours after tsunami arrival."

It also said the level of tsunami danger for other US and Canadian Pacific coasts was being evaluated.

A strong 6.9-magnitude quake struck off New Zealand's remote Kermadec Islands early Tuesday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake struck at 7:19 am (1919 GMT Monday) and occurred 96 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of Raoul Island in the Kermadecs, the US Geological Survey said, revising earlier parameters.

The epicentre was at a depth of 20 kilometres.

The largely uninhabited Kermadec Islands are located northeast of New Zealand's North Island.

The quake was followed two minutes later by an aftershock with a magnitude of 6.3, USGS said.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said of the original quake that "no destructive, widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data".

However, earthquakes of this size "sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometres of the earthquake epicentre", it said.

New Zealand sits on the so-called "Ring of Fire", the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year.

A shallow 6.3-magnitude quake devastated the New Zealand city of Christchurch in the South Island in February 2011, leaving 185 people dead.

Tokyo (AFP) June 15, 2014
Two moderate earthquakes struck off Japan's eastern coast near Fukushima early Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but officials said there was no immediate risk to the stricken power plant. The epicentre of the first quake, with a magnitude measuring 5.7, was located some 91 kilometres (56 miles) off the coast of Honshu, Japan's largest and most populated island, at a depth of 22 kilomet ... read more
