Buffalo-based Solar Liberty and international solar developer SunEdison has announced its plans to develop a formal solar education curriculum for middle and high school students, an important step in empowering the "next generation" to lead our clean energy future.

Both Solar Liberty and SunEdison are experienced in developing solar PV projects for schools. Recent projects include Solar Liberty's 1.3 MW solar PV system installed on 43 rooftops for the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo's private school system, and SunEdison's 1.1 MW solar rooftop project for Montgomery County Schools, located in Maryland just outside our nation's capital.

However, the companies' announcement reflects a commitment to more than "solar on schools," to "solar in schools."

"Energy systems at schools is about more than making electricity," added Adam Rizzo, President of Solar Liberty.

"Young people experience solar as a part of their daily routine. They see it, learn about it, and use it. Through both their experience using solar energy at the schools and learning about it through their curriculum, students will be more informed about sustainable energy and the green economy when making career choices and business decisions."

"SunEdison makes solar energy a reality for schools and universities across our nation that currently have limited access to these kinds of programs," added Brian Jacolick, General Manager, Americas for SunEdison.

"Through our strong partnerships, demonstrated track record, and our financing capabilities, SunEdison is able to lead the way in providing solar solutions to our schools while promoting the importance of solar and sustainability to our students."

The curriculum will be tested in Buffalo, New York beginning in the fall of 2010 among middle school and high school students, with the intention of rolling it out to additional classes/markets in the future. The pilot curriculum developed by Solar Liberty and SunEdison will be enhanced by the Buffalo Museum of Science to tailor the material for a local audience.

"We're proud to be a partner on this solar educational project," said Mark Mortenson, President and CEO of the Buffalo Museum of Science.

"The Science Museum prides itself on supplementing classroom instruction with hands on, inquiry based learning. The solar initiative will provide an enhanced learning experience for the school children of our region and our museum visitors."
