Taiwanese man pleads guilty to US military smuggling charges

 A Taiwanese man pleaded guilty Friday in New York to charges of trying to smuggle US military equipment to Taiwan, US prosecutors said.

Yen Ching Peng pleaded guilty to conspiracy to smuggle military items, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years, and also to four export violations charges, each of which carries maximum sentences of 10 years.

Peng, 32, is to be sentenced on March 24, the New York prosecutor's office said.

He was arrested in Hong Kong a year ago and extradited to the United States in August. An associate, Peter Liu from New York, was sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty.

Peng tried to obtain infrared laser aiming devices and thermal weapon sights for use on rifles, as well as a sophisticated fighter pilot's helmet. The items are on the US munitions list and can only be exported under license.

 A pair of giant pandas offered by China were expected to arrive in Taiwan by Christmas in yet another sign of improving ties, an official said Friday.
