Sydney (UPI) Mar 4, 2009
A climate scientist often referred to as the "godfather of climate change" said Australia's massive coal exports are almost equivalent to being a drug dealer to the world. In kicking off his visit to Australia for a series of lectures on nuclear energy, James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, had a message for the world's largest exporter of coal: Phase it ... more

Material developed to trap nuclear waste
Argonne, Ill. (UPI) Mar 2, 2009
U.S. scientists say they've created a material that mimics a Venus Flytrap, but instead of catching insects, it traps radioactive nuclear waste. Mercouri Kanatzidis, a scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, and Nan Ding, a chemist at Northwestern University, said their sulfide framework can trap radioactive cesium ions, giving it the potential of helping speed clean-up of nuclear waste. The researchers said nuclear waste contains both non-toxic sodium ions and highly r ... read more
